Course Aims

  • Check breaks, oil, tyres and electrical system
  • Drive defensively and handle hazardous road conditions
  • Load goods onto the truck
  • Ensure the load is correctly placed and secure using ropes and chains to avoid damage to the truck or goods
  • Calculate & estimate the weight of loads to comply with load limits
  • Couple and uncouple trailers
  • Change heavy tyres
  • Clean and maintain vehicles
  • Cover load with tarpaulin
  • Drive vehicles to their destination and unload
  • Check items against inventory
  • Note breakage and damage
  • Maintain a log book with details of trips, including rest breaks on long trips
  • Plan & prepare work
  • Identify hazards in the work place
  • Conduct pre-operational checks
  • Perform start-up & shut-down procedures
  • Operate Tip Truck
  • Apply concepts of road anatomy
  • Apply knowledge of soil and rock types and their characteristics
